What Retail Design Managers Really Do (And Why It Matters)
April 10, 2025Every December, shopping centres, department stores and retail spaces across Australia transform into dazzling destinations of light, texture, and creativity.
Beyond being places to shop, they become immersive experiences that evoke emotion and nostalgia, showing how powerful good design can be in shaping how people feel.
At Citrus ID, we understand that festive design is more than decoration. It is storytelling through space, drawing people in, encouraging them to linger, and creating memories that strengthen their connection to a brand or place.
Here’s a look at some of Australia’s most beautifully designed and decorated shopping destinations, each with its own take on Christmas magic.
The Strand Arcade, Sydney, NSW

Sydney’s historic Strand Arcade is the definition of Christmas elegance, celebrating Christmas with a signature Australian twist: large scale native flower installations.
Suspended across the arcade’s two central voids, the towering eucalyptus branches rise 3.5 metres high and almost 10 metres long, creating a dramatic visual moment visible from every level. Each installation features acrylic green leaves, red budding flowers and whimsical golden gumnuts, all illuminated by cascading lighting that enhances their sculptural beauty.
On the ground floor, a matching gumnut pod sculpture continues the native Christmas theme, echoing the forms that hang above. Across the building, more than 27,500 twinkling lights wrap the balustrades and highlight every detail, filling the space with a warm festive glow.
By blending Australian botanicals with contemporary design, the Strand Arcade has established a Christmas tradition that honours the building’s heritage while offering visitors a uniquely local and visually memorable experience.
Why it works:
A perfect example of how to respect architectural heritage while using lighting and greenery to create emotional warmth.
The installation pairs a uniquely Australian design language with the elegance of the Strand’s Victorian architecture, blending nostalgia and sophistication, and making it one of Sydney’s most photogenic festive experiences.
Westfield Sydney and Pitt Street Mall, NSW

Few places capture Christmas grandeur quite like Westfield Sydney and Pitt Street Mall.
This year, the centre has embraced a distinctly Australian touch, with Christmas trees dressed in lush eucalyptus leaves and wrapped in warm golden lights. The result feels both festive and uniquely local, celebrating Christmas through an Aussie lens.
Outside, Pitt Street Mall’s famous Canopy of Light transforms the precinct into a glowing tunnel of stars, drawing thousands of visitors every year.

Why it works:
Large scale lighting, a clear design theme and multi sensory elements turn a retail precinct into a shared community experience.
The use of eucalyptus and warm native inspired styling anchors the festive display in an unmistakably Australian identity.
Market City, Haymarket, NSW

Marketplace has transformed its Centre Court into a playful, high energy Christmas zone built entirely around guest interaction. The centre has created six themed selfie spots that invite visitors to step into the story and choose their side of the season.
From the Naughty Elf Lockup to the Judgement Seats, each space blends humour with immersive design. Shoppers can pick their perfect sleigh, walk through the dramatic Tunnel of Truth or pose on the Angel Swings framed by shimmering lights and festive décor. Every touchpoint encourages visitors to explore, play and create shareable moments.
The experience extends onto social channels, with shoppers invited to upload their favourite naughty or nice snap and tag @marketcity for the chance to win. It is an engaging way to merge physical retail with digital participation, keeping Christmas fun flowing both in centre and online.
Why it works:
Interactive displays transform a traditional Christmas setup into an experience people want to linger in. Bold visuals, playful storytelling and photo friendly design drive foot traffic, increase dwell time and encourage social sharing, bringing a fresh sense of fun to the festive season.
Queen Victoria Building, Sydney, NSW

A Wollemi Pine Christmas Tree Celebrating Culture and Country**
The QVB has unveiled a breathtaking 20 metre Wollemi Pine inspired Christmas tree, created in collaboration with the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co operative. As the largest indoor tree in NSW, it spans three levels and features a powerful First Nations artistic overlay.
Visitors can explore Dr. Bancroft’s immersive bush and rainforest installation at the base of the tree, complete with the sounds of endangered birds from Songs of Disappearance. From above, 45 hand painted flannel flowers by artists Jarratt and Samuels add a beautiful Australian touch.
Why it works:
It blends heritage, culture and Australian storytelling into a festive display that feels truly unique to Sydney.
Myer Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne, Victoria

Myer Melbourne celebrates the 70th anniversary of its iconic Christmas Windows with a vibrant collaboration with the LEGO Group, bringing “A Playful LEGO Christmas Story” to life in a six window display built from more than 488,215 LEGO bricks.
The windows follow a child’s letter to Santa as it travels from a Melbourne post office to the North Pole, brought to life through animated LEGO scenes including toy painting elves, a Wrap O Matic gift machine and Santa’s sleigh. Visitors will also spot LEGO figurines at Carols by Candlelight and a glowing brick built MCG ready for the Boxing Day Test.
Families can take home a limited edition LEGO Make and Take, featuring a Santa inspired kangaroo exclusive to Myer Melbourne.
Why it works:
It blends nostalgia, storytelling and playful creativity, refreshing a much loved Australian tradition with colour, movement and charm.
Christmas Design Takeaways for Retailers
From boutique arcades to large commercial hubs, these examples show that festive design is about more than visual appeal. It is about creating emotional connections through atmosphere, storytelling, interactive experiences and sensory detail.
The most successful Christmas installations share several qualities:
- Authenticity: Designs that reflect location, architecture, and audience feel genuine.
- Scale and proportion: Displays should balance impact with comfort, whether intimate or grand.
- Lighting: The hero of festive design, lighting defines tone and transforms ordinary materials into magic.
- Consistency: Cohesive theming across stores or precincts creates stronger brand recognition and visitor memory.
Design That Delights, Connects, and Inspires
As Christmas approaches, the best shopping centres remind us that design has the power to delight, connect, and inspire. The sparkle of light, the sound of music, and the scent of pine and cinnamon come together to transform shopping into an experience.
At Citrus ID, we believe that is the true magic of design, balancing function and feeling to bring spaces to life with creativity, intention, and joy.
Great design does not stop at Christmas. If you are looking to improve customer experience, streamline approvals or enhance the quality of your retail spaces, Citrus ID is here to help. Let’s create environments that feel vibrant, welcoming and beautifully designed.
